First, read the book... Then, watch the movie #3 (English Version)

Today, I'll be reviewing Perfume by Patrick Süskind.

 

Plot: "Survivor, Genius, Perfumer, Killer: This is Jean-Baptiste Grenouille.

He is abandoned on the filthy streets as a child, but grows up to discover he has an extraordinary gift: a sense of smell more powerful than any other human's.

Soon, he is creating the most sublime fragrances in Paris. Yet there is one odour he cannot capture. It is exquisite, magical: the scent of a young virgin. And to get it he must kill. And kill. And kill..."

Personal Opinion: I think the story is amazing (a boy that can "see" the world throught his "nose" and wishes to have the 25 best fragrances in his life, which belong to 25 young virgins.

In the mean while, a lot of things happen such as working with a famous perfumist, hiding in a cave for 7 years or being studied by a doctor. In the end, he murders the ladies.

Despite the killings, the reader can't help but to think that Grenouille is a victim of his nose.

Besides all the good things about this book (which is great and admirable), in my own opinion I think the author got lost in so many details and forgot a bit the action.

Movie: This movie came to life in 2006. The amazing Ben Whishaw plays Jean-Baptiste Grenouille.

There are some differences between the book and the movie but they make complete sense, as in Agatha Christie's Elephants Can Remember as I wrote here.

The greatest thing about the movie is that you can even smell all the scents which are being showed and it is a great way to bring to life the book, as it is very truthful.

The rate on IMDb is 7,5.

Hoje vou falar sobre O Perfume - História de Um Assassino de Patrick Süskind da Editorial Presença.

Sinopse: "Esta estranha história passa-se no século XVIII e há todo um extraordinário trabalho de reconstituição histórica, não só da época e das mentalidades, como do ofício de perfumista, que então era particularmente valorizado e que estava a cargo de artesãos especializados. Patrick Süskind conduz o leitor de página em página, de odor em odor, de perfume em perfume, enebriando-o, arrebatando-o nessa alquímica busca do Absoluto que é a do seu personagem: a busca do perfume ideal, isto é, a forma suprema da Beleza. Nessa busca nada deterá Jean-Baptiste Grenouille - que nascera no meio dos mais nauseabundos fedores, numa banca de peixe -, nem mesmo os crimes mais hediondos. Este personagem monstruoso possui no entanto algo de extremamente inquietante, a sua própria incorrupta pureza.".

Opinião Pessoal: Pessoalmente, eu achei esta história brilhante (um rapaz, que desde sempre tem a capacidade de "ver" o Mundo através do olfato e que deseja ter ao seu alcance as - que para ele são as melhores - fragrâncias de 25 jovens lindíssimas e virgens. Por isso, passa por imensas provações: trabalha para um perfumista, criando as mais belas combinações de essências, esconde-se numa caverna durante sete anos, é levado por um médico para estudo e tudo isso culmina nos assassínios. 
Porém, ao longo da obra, dá-nos (pelo menos a mim) a impressão que ele próprio era a vítima, submetido ao poderoso nariz, que ao avistar alguma rapariga com estas características o impulsiona a fazer de tudo para a ter.
No entanto, penso que em determinadas alturas, Süskind perde-se um pouco nos detalhes, esquecendo a ação.
Este livro é uma obra admirável que retrata muito bem a influência do Renascimento nas mentalidades.

 Filme: Este filme estreou em 2006 e conta com o excelente Ben Whishaw no papel de Jean-Baptiste Grenouille.

Apesar de haverem algumas alterações no filme, que são partes que não constam no livro, e tal como o que aconteceu aqui, fazem bastante sentido na forma como estão inseridas.
Esta longa-metragem leva-nos a sentir todos os cheiros (por exemplo, o mercado ou as ameixas) a que Grenouille é exposto e é um ótimo desfecho para quem acaba de ler o livro, como maneira de "materializar" todas as imagens e situações.
No IMDb, este filme está classificado como 7,5.

The second part of this new set of posts is all about The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

 

  

Plot: "Charlie is a freshman. And while he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it. Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But Charlie can't stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.".

Personal Opinion: I think this book shows really well and truthful all the emotions, frustrations, adventures and good times that teenagers go through. In this case, Charlie, who let us know everything about his life by the letters he sends someone, anonymously.
Something that I quite like is the fact that all the characters have different life's stories which are very singular, but, in fact are commun in today's society.
By mentioning sex, love, drinks, drugs, unexplored feelings and the fight against the bad things and situations teens are exposed, the writer brings people together as they also associate themselves to Charlie.

Rate: 8/10 (Pretty Good!)

Movie

This book turned into a movie in 2012, being Stephen Chbosky the director. The cast includes actors such as Logan Lerman (Charlie), Emma Watson (Sam) and Ezra Miller (Patrick).

This movie captures really well the essence of the book and explores all the situations that the teenager has to go trought without missing any important fact.

Another great point is the way the 90's are described and showed and the soundtrack, which is amazing.

I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it!

IMDb's rate for this movie is 8,1.

Neste segundo segmento, vou falar do livro "As Vantagens de Ser Invisível" de Stephen Chbosky.

 

Sinopse: "Estamos em 1991. O academicamente precoce e socialmente desajeitado Charlie é um ser invisível, que vive no seu próprio mundo, até conhecer um carismático par que o decide ajudar. A bonita e rebelde Sam e o seu destemido meio-irmão Patrick guiam Charlie através de novas amizades, primeiro amor, sexualidade, festas, exibições de meia-noite do filme "Rocky Horror" e na busca pela canção perfeita.".

Opinião Pessoal: Eu acho que este livro foi muito bem conseguido na medida em que explora de forma muito real todas as emoções, aventuras, frustrações e glórias a que os adolescentes são submetidos, neste caso, Charlie, que nos mostra o seu mundo através das cartas que este manda a alguém, como forma de desabafo, anonimamente.

Algo que eu gostei muito foi o facto de todas as personagens terem histórias bastante singulares e peculiares, mas que na realidade, são super comuns e passam-se com muitas pessoas na vida fictícia. 

Ao falar de sexo, amor, bebidas, drogas, sentimentos inexplorados e n luta contra os dissabores da vida, já que Charlie vive triste devido à morte da sua tia e ao suicídio do seu amigo, que o levou numa depressão, esta obra aproxima o leitor às vivências deste grupo de amigos que nos faz recordar o passado ou o presente, para os jovens.

Classificação atribuída por mim: 8/10 (Bastante Bom!)

Só consegui encontrar o livro para venda em Inglês.

Filme

A adaptação para filme deste livro foi feita em 2012, sendo o diretor o próprio Stephen Chbosky. O elenco conta com ótimos atores como Logan Lerman (Charlie), Emma Watson (Sam) e Ezra Miller (Patrick).

Em termos de conteúdo, esta longa-metragem capta bastante bem a essência do livro e explora de forma muito verdadeira todas as provações que Charlie enfrenta, não deixando de parte nenhum acontecimento importante.

Um outro ponto forte é a ótima caracterização das personagens, assim como dos espaços que nos remetem ao início dos anos 90 e a banda sonora, que é extraordinária.

Gostei muito do filme e recomendo!
